About the Group Stars Report

The Group Stars Report is an additional motivational tool introduced in Session 6.

Each week, it shows the total number of earned stars the families in the group have accumulated toward a group goal.

Open the Group Stars Report from the LENA Online Session Preparation screen for your group.

What's on the Group Stars Report?

The Group Stars Report shows:

  • weekly star goals
  • a final group goal
  • the total number of earned stars the families in the group have accumulated each week
  • participation statistics

It does not show which families have contributed stars.

Weekly Goals

The Weekly Goal is just under one star per family per week. The goal is indicated by a red dot, unless it is met - then the dot becomes a star!

A group that meets each weekly goal will meet the group goal. However, weeks 1 and 2 offer fewer ways to earn stars, so families may need to aim a little higher over the course of the program.

How is the weekly goal determined?

Weekly Goal = (# of Session 1 families) x (0.8 stars) x (Week #)

Group Goal

The Group Goal is the long-term target for the total number of stars to be earned by the group before the final session.

A ring of stars appears at the top of the bar for the week when the group goal is met.

A group will meet the goal if each family who attended Session 1 earns, on average, just under 1 star per LENA report.

How is the group goal determined?

Group Goal = (# of Session 1 families) x (0.8 stars) x (8 weeks)

The calculations are based on 8 weeks instead of 10 because of the time lag between when recordings are made and when they are processed - typically the next week. For example, recordings done after Session 8 are processed at/after Session 9, making them available for reporting at Session 10. When the recordings made after Session 9 are processed into reports, the group is no longer meeting.

Progress bars

Each bar represents a session and shows the total number of stars earned up through the next session.

The purple area shows the previous total, and the green area indicates new stars earned.

For example:

  • The "4" bar represents the stars from all LENA Days made before Session 5, and all reading minutes reported before Session 5.
    • The purple area shows the previous, cumulative total - it matches the week before.
    • The green area shows the new stars from the week after Session 4. These are for:
      • Words and/or Turns from recordings made after learning the Session 4 content (devices transferred at Session 5, and reports printed for Session 6)
      • Reading minutes reported between Session 4 and Session 5
Participation and performance statistics

The top of the report shows information about participation - that is, what percent of the group is completing LENA Days and reporting reading minutes, regardless of whether stars were earned. For groups who are struggling to meet star goals, participation can be a point of focus instead - just keep in mind that the data are from two weeks before the current session.

How are these numbers calculated?

Recordings Completed

  • This week - % of families who submitted a LENA Day made during the week represented by the last bar
  • Last week - % of families who submitted a LENA Day made during the week represented by the previous bar

Reading Minutes Replies

  • This week - % of families who reported reading minutes during the week represented by the last bar
  • Last week - % of families who texted in Reading minutes for the week represented by the previous bar

This area also shows performance - how many stars per family the group is learning. Some groups may choose to celebrate increases here.

How is total stars per family calculated?

Total Stars Per Family = (total # stars for the week) / (# families attending Session 1)

Why is the Group Stars Report important?

The Group Stars Report builds on the group dynamic and encourages team effort because every family can contribute to meeting weekly and group goals through Words, Turns, and Reading Minutes.

Many sites choose to add an incentive to Group Stars - for example, an additional book for meeting a weekly goal, or a cake celebration when the group goal is reached.
